Boundaries, Communication, &
Working with Trauma Survivors
While most of us have received extensive training in our chosen bodywork discipline, we often did not receive training in the communication skills needed to successfully manage our professional relationships. How we handle the level of closeness that may develop between the client and ourselves significantly impacts our effectiveness. Our work as healthcare practitioners is most successful when we consistently examine our professional boundaries, monitoring when and with whom they may have become blurred.
Of the clients we treat, at least one in every five has been the victim of physical, emotional or sexual trauma. Developing clear boundaries and good communication skills helps ensure that the work we do with trauma survivors, and the entire range of clients we treat, is effective.
Participants will learn:
The anatomy of good communication
Ways to establish very clear boundaries
How to create a safe therapeutic environment
The nature and impact of dual relationships
The effects of trauma and abuse
Verbal and physical techniques for working with trauma survivors
How to deal with flashbacks, memories and emotions
The workshop will include:
Presentations Conversations Discussions
Films Videos Hands-on Skills
Role Plays to deal with flashbacks
Trauma survivors talking about their lives
